With the prospective opening of Laguindingan International Airport, what should happen to Lumbia airport? The strong suggestion is that it should continue servicing commercial flights into Mindanao. Northern Mindanao can use two airports. The flights at present into Lumbia are fully booked. Cebu Pacific has done a great job of getting people to fly. It is cheaper to fly than to go by ship and, at the same time, save at least a full day in going by ship. The other airlines, PAL and Zest, are also coming in full. Cagayan de Oro should not be only the shipping gateway to Mindanao but also the air gateway to Mindanao, or at least to Northern Mindanao.

Philippine Airlines along with Zest Air, Cebu Pacific Air and PAL Express have all expressed their displeasure at the Philippine Department of Transportation and Communications’ decision to forge ahead with the June 15 opening of the new USD190million Laguindingan International Airport, set to replace the smaller Cagayan de Oro Lumbia airport as the gateway to Northern Mindanao and Misamis Oriental provinces.
