The bill seeking to change the name “University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTSP)” into the “University of Science and Technology of the Philippines (USTP)” has just been unanimously approved by the Committee on Higher and Technical Education, chaired by Rep. Mark Go.
Cagayan de Oro City 2nd Dist. Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, author of House Bill 1456, said that the emphasis on “southern Philippines” in USTSP’s current name gives the impression that the university only caters to and focuses on individuals from the southern part of the country, when it reality it serves individuals nationwide.
“In fact, the excellent performance of the University of Science and Technology of the Southern Philippines today in all areas, especially in Mechanical Engineering August 2022 exams wherein it ranked 4th nationwide, makes it very clear that it is at the forefront in the delivery of science and technology courses in the entire Philippines,” Rodriguez added.
It can be recalled that the same measure was approved in the 18th Congress but the Senate failed to hear on final reading. Cong. Rufus is seeking for the prompt passage of this bill in the present Congress.
