Misamis Oriental 2nd District Representative Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano will be filing a bill UPGRADING LAGUINDINGAN AIRPORT into an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. The said bill which will be co-authored by Misamis Oriental 1st District Rep. Christian Unabia and Cagayan de Oro 1st District Rep. Lordan Suan also seeks to establish the Laguindingan International Airport Authority (LIAA).
The airport which was designed to accommodate 1.6 million passengers a year opened in June 2013 at full capacity. It was constructed in accordance to international standards but is yet to handle international flights. In 2019,the airport handled 2,310,472 passengers which is already almost 45% above its terminal capacity. Amid the pandemic last year (2021), Laguindingan Airport was the busiest airport outside of Manila, Clark and Cebu with 611,469 passenger movement.
