In case you didn’t know it yet, the National Economic and Development Authority Regional Office in Nothern Mindanao (NEDA-X) is now referring the metropolitan area of Cagayan de Oro as Metro Cagayan de Misamis. This was indicated in its latest Facebook post regarding the recent courtesy visit by NEDA-X Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño, CESO III and staff to the newly-installed local chief executives of the local government units in the western part of the metro.

Director Cariño met with Governor Peter M. Unabia (Province of Misamis Oriental), Mayor Rolando A. Uy (Cagayan de Oro City), Mayor Jayfrancis D. Bago (Opol), Mayor Edgar S. Lignes (El Salvador City), Mayor Emmanuel L. Jamis (Alubijid), Mayor Emmanuel S. Mugot (Gitagum), Mayor Leonardo L. Uy, Jr. (Libertad), Mayor Mercy Grace J. Acain (Initao), and Mayor Diosdado T. Obsioma (Laguindingan) through the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator Mayette Mabalos to discuss regional development imperatives and strengthen convergence and collaboration among stakeholders.

Last September 2021, the Ad hoc Committee for Metro Cagayan de Misamis was organized with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno elected as its Chairperson. Members of this Committee include the Northern Mindanao Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Economic and Development Authority Regional Office X (NEDA-X), and the local governments of Cagayan de Oro City, El Salvador City, Alubijid, Claveria, Gitagum, Initao, Jasaan, Laguindingan, Libertad, Opol, Tagoloan, Villanueva, Manolo Fortich, and provinces of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.

The said Committee will perform in the interim the governance mechanisms as proposed in the Masterplan for the Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Development in Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro (SUID MCDO), while waiting for the creation of a metropolitan development authority through the passage of a law.

It can be recalled that the term Metro Cagayan de Misamis was first used by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez when he filed a bill creating the Metro Cagayan de Misamis Development Authority (MCMDA). The latest update was that it was approved at the House Committee level last September 2020 at the height of the pandemic. See our post below.
