Three (3) civilians were injured due to shrapnel wounds during the fire incident which broke out in one of the buildings at the Ammunition Complex inside Camp Evangelista in Patag, Cagayan de Oro City a little past midnight on July 12, 2022. In a statement, Army Major Francisco Garello Jr of the Public Affairs Office of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) stated that the building houses 155mm Howitzer rounds and various small arms ammunitions. The 3 wounded civilians are now being treated at Camp Evangelista Station Hospital. The explosions roused many residents in the city from sleep and were heard from as far as El Salvador City.
Maj. Garello further stated that all personnel near the incident site evacuated for safety and civilians nearby were advised to evacuate to the 4ID Gymnasium, the designated evacuation center within the camp. The cause of the incident is yet to be determined. The fire was declared out at 3:10 AM. However, the incident area needs a cooling period before personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) could move in to clear the area. When the residual fire would have been completely contained, Army investigating team including City fire authorities will come in to conduct thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
