The Regional Quality Assessment Team (RQAT) of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region X recently conducted an onsite inspection and validation of the upcoming College of Medicine of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro (USTP CDO) particularly of its facilities and support services last May 11, 2022.

It can be recalled that the House of Representatives has already approved last August 3, 2021 House Bill 9522 authored by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez which establishes the College of Medicine at USTP. But while the bill is still pending for Senate approval, USTP applied its requirements with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to facilitate the opening this year in August.

CHED’s RQAT is composed of Dr. Gina S. Itchon and Dr. Ruth S. Beltran, accompanied by CHED Supervisor Dr. Arlita Amapola B. Minguez. Several USTP officials accompanied the CHED representatives led by Dr. Mitchel Dennis B. Gonzalez, Dean of the College of Medicine of USTP CDO, and Dr. Maria Elena L. Paulma, Vice President for Academic Affairs of the USTP System.

Among the various facilities inspected for the USTP College of Medicine include the laboratories for Anatomy, Histology/Microparasitology, and Biochemistry/Physiology/Pharmacology. The team also visited the Faculty Office, Clinic, Library, Audio Visual Room (AVR), and other offices that will provide support services to the college’s faculty, students, and staff. They also stopped by the ongoing development of the new USTP CDO Clinic and the proposed USTP College of Medicine Building.
