CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY GEARS TOWARD GOLDEN AGE OF INFRASTRUCTURE WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE CDO CONVENTION CENTER MAIN BUILDING
The long wait is finally over as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region X completes the main building of the Cagayan de Oro (CDO) Convention Center situated in Barangay Indahag. In a virtual inauguration and turnover ceremony premiered on September 8, 2021, DPWH turns over the facility to the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
The CDO Convention Center, which was initially funded in the year 2000, was put on hold in the year 2012 due to questions in land ownership, until finally resolved in the year 2016 with the generosity of the Magtajas family who donated the land where the building complex is situated.
Upon resumption, the replacement of various fixtures that were dilapidated and beyond economical repair was found necessary. The interior and exterior design concept of the building complex had to be upgraded to be at par with international standards. The TIEZA requirements also had to be incorporated into the restoration plan for the facility to be fully operational and marketable.
“We programmed the completion of the CDO Convention Center as part of the big-ticket projects in the country under the flagship of the Build, Build, Build Program. From then on, the multi-million works for the said project was continued and fast-tracked with funds released in years 2017, 2018, and 2020; and this year, the main facility of the CDO Convention Center is now complete and is ready to house about 7,700 spectators for various events like sports, concerts, conventions, exhibits, seminars, conferences and trade shows,” DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar stated.
He continued, “We also envision to fulfill the site development plan and construction of additional amenities and support facilities of the CDO Convention Center making it globally competitive with the ongoing funding requests for its car park building, power house, sewage treatment plant facility, pump house, materials recovery facility, restaurant, pavilion, administrative building and TIEZA office building that would sum up to 1.3 billion pesos.” Provision of access roads is also proposed for funding amounting to Php 359.5 Million.
Secretary Villar also shared that even when he is no longer the DPWH Secretary, he hopes that the legacy of accelerating public infrastructure projects will continue for many years and a better life with better connectivity will live on for ages.
The main building was completed in April of 2021 and undergone a test run of its mechanical and electronic work items, which needed fine tuning to achieve the desired level of performance and effectiveness. However, due to the travel restrictions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, out-of-town technicians encountered a delay. Until finally, the inauguration was set in September 2021 as both agreed by DPWH as the implementing office and TIEZA as the end-user of the facility.
“Alam niyo naman po na nadaanan tayo ng pandemya at ang ganitong imprastraktura katulad ng Cagayan de Oro Convention Center ay isang magandang paninimula para sa pagbangon ng ating turismo na talagang tinamaan dahil sa pandemya,” TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid expressed. He continued that TIEZA remains the public’s partner in building tourism. “Ito po ay simbolo ng ating pagka panalo laban sa pandemya,” he concluded.
DPWH-X Regional Director Zenaida T. Tan also expressed her gratitude and felicitations to the people behind this success, “On behalf of the entire workforce of the DPWH Region X, I sincerely extend my warmest appreciation and gratitude to each and every one who has shared an effort in pursuing the completion of the CDO Convention Center Project. Without your slightest help, no success would have been reached. Maraming salamat po.”
Congressman Rufus B. Rodriguez, Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano, Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba, CDO City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno, and National Economic and Development Authority-X (NEDA-X) Regional Director Mylah Faye Aurora B. Cariño also extended their greetings for the inauguration of this additional major facility in the City of Golden Friendship.
