JUNMERTH C. JORTA, a full time elementary teacher of the Matigsalug tribe in San Fernando, Bukidnon has just been named as among the finalists for this year’s Metrobank Foundation Inc. Search for Outstanding Filipinos.

According to Metrobank Foundation, Jorta “is the first, among the many volunteer educators who decided to stay and help establish a last mile school called Keupiyanan Te Balugo”.

Other than creating customized literacy and math modules, Jorta also conceptualized a four-year old free lunch feeding program called “Balugo Pagkaon Sakto” aimed at addressing absenteeism and curb hunger among students.

Since the community is prone to landslides and flash floods, Jorta mobilized community members to practice a sustainable and green lifestyle. Through the assistance of the local government and Department of Agriculture, he facilitates a reforestation program at least twice a year and trains members of the community on proper waste disposal and management.”
