Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Lordan G. Suan is proposing to pass an ordinance or a resolution requesting the city mayor to grant tax amnesty to some business owners and establishments for their delinquencies in the payment of business and real property taxes. Councilor Suan made this proposal during yesterday’s City Council regular session.
Suan said delinquent taxpayers should be incentivized to pay their taxes through the removal of obstacles and difficulties such as penalties and surcharges. Meanwhile, real property taxpayers would be given a condonation of all delinquencies which are older than five years, he added.
According to Suan, enacting such policy will give business owners and establishments some much-needed economic reprieve reeling from the effects of the pandemic. It would also show the city government’s compassion to businesses that have closed shop due to the health crisis.
Suan’s proposal was referred to the committees on ways and means and on finance, budget and appropriations chaired respectively by Councilors George S. Goking and Edna M. Dahino.
