Cagayan de Oro City will be celebrating its 71st Charter Day tomorrow, June 15, 2021. But do you know who was its first mayor? TORIBIO CHAVES, one of the respected poets of then Cagayan de Misamis was its first municipal mayor from 1898 to 1900.
Known as “Capitan Bibo”, his poem “Pinahanongod” became the Kagayanon’s manifesto of our victory against Spain on Janaury 10, 1899, our own version of the “Declaration of Independence.”
During those years, the town center was located in the vicinity of present day Gaston Park.
A street in Brgy 4 is named in his honor. Toribio Chaves Street runs from Burgos Street (near City Hall) to Corrales Avenue at Xavier University.
