A photo of the family left behind by the mother who was killed in a hit-and-run incident along Damilag Road in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon went viral in social media drawing support from netizens and calling for justice. Widower Rene James Salagantin posted the photo of him holding their 11-month old baby and two daughters left behind by Kayee Salagantin, who was co-founder of Modern Nanays of Mindanao (MNM), a mothers group advocating breastfeeding, cloth diapering and babywearing. Photo was taken during the burial last May 6.
His photo below has drawn more than 90,000 reactions and shared at least 40,000 times.
Based on police reports, last May 2, 2021, Rene James was riding his motorcycle with Kayee as backrider when they were bumped from behind by a speeding Gray Honda Jazz (photo below) driven by suspect Rogelio Britos who was reportedly drunk. Both Rene James and Kayee were thrown off the motorcycle and were brought to nearby Bukidnon Provincial Hospital Annex. Kayee later expired due to serious injuries sustained. Britos had earlier bumped a motorcycle driven by Jessie Lofranco also with a backrider. The suspect escaped after the incident but was chased by local residents and finally apprehended at Alae Quarantine Checkpoint. He is now in police custody.
Meanwhile, MNM posted some ways to help support Kayee’s family and children.
