Former Asian Games bronze and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist boxer Genebert Basadre has died. Basadre passed away last April 25, 2021, days after collapsing at his home in Cagayan de Oro City.

According to a statement released by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP), Basadre was immediately rushed to Polymedic Plaza Hospital last April 19 after collapsing at his home. He was revived on April 20 but slipped into a coma.


As an amateur in the lightweight division, Basadre clinched a bronze medal in the 2002 Acropolis Cup in Athens, Greece. He would later won the gold in at the 2005 SEA Games. After winning a bronze at the 2006 Asian Games, Basadre placed second in the Tammer Cup in Tampere, Finland in the very same year. His last title was a silver medal campaign at the Kings Cup tournament in Thailand in 2009. Basadre then retired from amateur boxing to focus fully with the Philippine Army, and sometimes coach aspiring Cagayan de Oro-based boxers.
