Last weekend, balsa operators in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental started using the newly-built docking site in Bukara area in Barangay Moog. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-10 (BFAR-10) called on the temporary suspension of said activities pending compliance with the requirements set to legally open again including permits from the local government unit (LGU) and concerned government agencies.
It can be recalled that balsa operators in Moog had to temporarily stop their operations after the entrance at the old Moog Port was closed and the concrete blocks that serve as anchors by the floating cottages caused damage to corals after an underwater survey.
Meanwhile, BFAR-10 Regional Director Teodoro Bacolod Jr. said his office is not against the operation because it is a livelihood but urged operators not to put balsas in critical areas especially in marine protected areas and fish sanctuaries. He also urged the LGUs to enact ordinances to protect their marine and aquatic resources as they live with a big role in sustaining and protecting their underwater biodiversity.
