The unusual red color of seawater in Ozamiz City last Sunday, February 21, 2021 is caused by algal bloom. This was bared by Bureau of Fisheries ad Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Director Teodoro A. Bacolod, Jr. during a press conference held today.
As presented by Rey Eduardo Hojas, OIC of the Regional Fisheries Laboratory Division, the possible causes of algal blooms are as follows:
- planktonic cells from outside sources
- increase in Phosphorus, Phosphate, nitrate and nitrite in water
- high temperature and salinity of water
Algal blooms are harmful to marine fishes. Below are screengrabs from live video courtesy of Magnum Radyo.
