Meanwhile, SM Cinema is exclusively showing Stand by Me Doraemon 2 in commemoration of Doraemon’s 50th anniversary.
Stand by Me Doraemon was released in 2014, engulfing all of Japan in excitement. The incredible first Doraemon movie to use 3DCG animation and have a touching story that made even adults cry became phenomenal, with the box office revenue exceeding 8.38 billion yen.
This year, the sequel will finally be released in collaboration with director Ryuichi Yagi and screenwriter / co-director Takashi Yamazaki.
The film is based on Memories of Grandma, which is widely known as a masterpiece in the original story. “My hope for people who’ll watch the movie is that they can remember the milestones in their life, just like me. Stand by Me Doraemon 2 depicts such occasions that all generations who know Doraemon can sympathize with” says Director Yagi.
“When people see themselves and their families in the activities of the characters, I think they are moved,” says Director Yamazaki. “The original Doraemon work has that kind of power. Nobita is a character that has the power to make people relate to him, besides, I made this work while thinking about my parents and grandmother, so I think a lot of people can relate to their own stories as well. I hope they will think of their parents and family.”
