Barangay Canitoan has proven once again their dedication and unwavering support to Cagayan de Oro City’s call for Best Practices on Ecological Solid Waste Management after declared Champion in the Suburban Category in the just concluded Oro Kalimpyo Awards (OKA 2019), its 3rd consecutive win in the city government’s initiative aimed at promoting multi-sectoral collaboration in the implementation of RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

For three consecutive years, the concerted effort of Barangay Canitoan’s LGU, SK Federation and youth volunteers in upholding the guildelines of solid waste management as provided by City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) is a concrete statement that shows possibility for Cagayan de Oro to achieve zero-waste.

The third annual Oro Kalimpyo Award or OKA 2019 was concluded in an awarding yesterday February 1, 2021, during the Flag Ceremony at CDO City Hall grounds after months of delay due to the threat of Covid19 pandemic last year.

With its evaluation period held from September to October of 2019, the original date of the awarding was targeted in June 2020 in time for the City Charter Day. But the event was put on hold as the city government focused management on Covid-19 response and mitigation in the region.

In the later part of 2020, CLENRO and the OKA search committee decided to push for the second phase of the evaluation and the awarding ceremony by January 2021.

From 80 Barangays (under 3 subcategories) evaluated in 2019, they were down to top 10 for each category – Urban, Suburban and Hinterland for January 2021 evaluation. The evaluation from each category was done with minimum health protocols such as wearing of face mask and face shielf all time, observing physical distancing, and washing/disinfection of hands regularly.

Evaluation for top 10 Barangays was conducted for 4 days. Upon selection of the Top 5, a defense was held between the Solid Waste Committee of the respective Barangays and the Search Committee of Oro Kalimpyo Awards 2019.

The winners and the top 5 per category are:
