As classes start anew, Sumilao LGU launches its Adopt-a-Student program that calls for volunteers to help and tutor disadvantaged students in the province of Bukidnon.

The Sumilao Adopt-a-Student program aims to assist students from families with low educational backgrounds and students with parents who are struggling to help them with modules.

“Be a Volunteer. Be a Hero. Help our Future Generation.

This is the program’s tagline.

Why Volunteer?

You get to work closely with one student.

Each volunteer is paired with a student as a private tutor and will work one-on-one with the disadvantaged student.

The District Office will be providing recommendations on select students that can significantly benefit from the program. The goal is to help the students improve their academic standing and grades, further encourage and motivate them to learn, and increase interest in pursuing higher education in a college or university level.

An excellent way to spend time during quarantine

No one is too busy to help and with the quarantine where long-distance travel is still not an option, giving time to help others is a good idea.

Volunteers will only need to spend at least two (2) hours every week to visit and tutor their partner students. The volunteer gets to choose their schedule of visit (time and day) depending on their availability.

Be a Role Model and Make a Positive Impact in a someone’s Life

Everyone can use someone they can look up to. For the students of Sumilao, this can be the volunteers. Take an active role in shaping the youth’s future and help them have access to the same educational opportunities as you do. You can literally change their life for the better!

Give Back and Find Joy in Helping

We rise by lifting others, from the writer Robert Ingersoll. Volunteering your time, skills, and knowledge brings joy not just for the benefactor but for the volunteer as well. Helping someone is a gratifying and humbling experience. It offers a new way of learning for both parties and helps contribute to a life of purpose, fulfillment, and happiness.

Volunteering Benefits for Body and Mind Wellness

It is a known fact that volunteering helps the volunteer as much as the recipient. But in what ways precisely and how? Here are some quick info from articles released by Harvard Health (2013) and Washington Post (2020).

  • Volunteer work helps in stress reduction
  • Volunteering with mentally stimulating activities such as reading and tutoring helps maintain memory and thinking skills
  • Volunteering helps people be more socially connected, decreasing risks of loneliness and depression
  • Volunteers report being more satisfied with their lives compared to non-volunteers
  • Volunteers demonstrate better mental and physical health compared to non-volunteers
  • Volunteers who just started became happier over time
  • Volunteering is a great way to develop professional and leadership skills, especially for the youth

While living under a pandemic, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with everything going on. Volunteering is one way to achieve a sense of control and fulfillment while at the same time help others, especially the youth, improve their lives.

What volunteer opportunities are there?

When it comes to volunteering, there are several opportunities available!

Local programs such as the Sumilao Adopt-a-Student require personal visits and interactions, while there are also remote volunteering opportunities mostly available online.

However, when it comes to the level of necessity, education should be the priority—helping these disadvantaged students will improve their personal lives and their families and bring the entire community forward.

And if you are a good fit to volunteer, you can make this possible with just two hours every week. That’s just almost equivalent to watching one full movie!
