Most Reverend Jose Araneta Cabantan, DD, a native of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental, was formally installed yesterday, August 28, 2020 as the 5th Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. Prior to his priesthood, Archbishop Cabantan worked as a licensed chemical engineer with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Cebu Institute of Technology.
Bishop Emeritus Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, DD was designated by Pope Francis to formally install Cabantan in yesterday’s solemn ceremony attended by priests, lay ministers and government officials led by City Mayor Oscar Moreno and Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano.
The 63-year old Cabantan previously led the archdiocese’s social action center before he was appointed bishop of Malaybalay in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. He was also among the first batch of priest-graduates of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary located at Seminary Hill in Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro. Pope Francis appointed him as the new archbishop last June 23, 2020.
