Filipino-American Hernando Planells, Jr. whose mother Carmen Waga-Pangan hails from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines has been named as the new head coach of the California-based William Jessup University (WJU) women’s basketball team.

Planells has long been into basketball coaching with recently being a former assistant head coach of the University of Duke Lady Blue Devils.

In 2005, Planells became the youngest professional basketball coach in the US coaching the Wyoming Golden Eagles in the All-American Professional Basketball League. He also became an NBA scout from 2005-2010 and an assistant coach with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA D-League from 2010-11.

And by the way, did you know he also choreographed basketball scenes and trained actors in some of popular movies such as “Coach Carter” with Samuel L. Jackson, “The Longest Yard” with Adam Sandler, “Rebound” starring Martin Lawrence and “Spider-Man 3” starring Tobey Maguire.
