A police officer was killed while another cop was wounded in a shootout with a group of gunmen at a checkpoint in Libertad town in Misamis Oriental Monday night, February 17, 2020. One of the suspects was also killed by policemen.
Based on news gathered from radio and social media, the slain policeman was identified as Police Staff Sergeant Ronald Caayupan while the wounded cop was was identified as Staff Sergeant Fernando Maestrado. Both are from the Libertad Police Station. The dead suspect remains unidentified due to numerous IDs bearing different names in his possession.
Initial reports revealed SSgt Caayupan flagged down the Mitsubishi Mirage ridden by the suspects for inspection at the bridge checkpoint near Poblacion, Libertad. The vehicle stopped but the suspects instead opened fire hitting the two cops who retaliated killing one of the armed men. The other suspects fled on foot and jumped off the bridge and are now being pursued by responding policemen.
Investigators found personal belongings inside the car including several guns such as four .45 caliber pistols, two KG 9, one .9-mm pistol, four hand grenades, and five sachets of suspected crystal meth or “shabu.”
Meanwhile, authorities are requesting all residents to report any suspicious individuals in the town. The suspects are believed to be still hiding in the town’s premises. Browse more photos in the links below.
