The biggest Seaport Passenger Terminal in the country was inaugurated this year along with the new Opol Port, PPA Electronic Gate and Tagoloan Flood Control Project.

WILCON DEPOT OPOL. Top home furnishing retail store opened its latest branch last July 2019 along the Coastal Road in Igpit, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

GAISANO CAPITAL BALINGASAG. Gaisano finally established its presence in Balingasag.

THE VIEW DECK – Increased tourism activity in Claveria with the opening of the View Deck at Brgy. Lanise.

NEW EL SALVADOR CITY HALL AND GYMNASIUM – the youngest city in the region inaugurated its modern city hall and gymnasium

OZAMIZ COASTAL BYPASS ROAD – new diversion road opened

PUREGOLD OZAMIZ – supermarket chain has opened in Ozamiz

SM BOWLING CENTER – bowling in Cagayan de Oro has never been the same with the fully automated sports hub inside a mall

PROJECT WATCH: Major New Developments and Project Launches

The biggest private commercial news for the year was the planned sale of Xavier University’s main campus to Cebu Landmasters Inc. for the creation of Manresa Town. The project is still up for approval though from Jesuit heirarchy at the Vatican.

MISAMIS ORIENTAL MEDICAL CENTER – modern medical facility to rise in Balingasag

It was announced that the Cebu Pacific Flight 387 Shrine will be converted into a botanical and tourism complex.


PRIMAVERA CITY PHASE 2 (CITTA BELLA) – phase 2 of the mixed-use development broke ground.

PROJECT LUNHAW – Plaza Divisoria facelift has started

LAGUINDINGAN TECHNOPARK – Planned Ayala investment in the province near the airport broke ground.

REGIONAL COMMAND AND CONTROL CENTER – Groundbreaking for the command and control center held at Lumbia Airport.

CITY ECOPARK DEVELOPMENT – The old dumpsite will finally be developed.

DREAM RESIDENCES – a major residential resort development right across Del Monte Golf Course

PAG-ASA PLANETARIUM – much awaited planetarium project in El Salvador City broke ground this year

CITY HALL EMPLOYEES HOUSING – housing units for city hall employees broke ground

BALUBAL HOUSING PHASE 2 – more housing units for resettlement

CITY SPORTS TRAINING CENTER – initial P50 million budget allocated

Sabio ends Emano reign in Tagoloan. Gomer “Enan” Sabio beat incumbent Tagoloan Mayor Heckert “Manok” Emano basically ending the reign of the Emano clan in the municipality.

ROAD CLEARING OPERATIONS – nationwide directive to clear public roads

DONGKOY PASSES AWAY. Former Cagayan de Oro City Mayor VICENTE “DONGKOY” YAP EMANO died on May 7 at the age of 76 due to pneumonia. Known as a political kingpin in the province, Emano first entered politics when he was mayor of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental from 1980-1983. He was elected to the gubernatorial post serving from 1986 to 1995. He went to become a 4-term mayor of Cagayan de Oro City from 1998 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2013. From 2007 to 2010 he was City Vice Mayor. In 2013, he had an unsuccessful comeback in the political arena losing to incumbent City Mayor Oscar Moreno.

NENE PIMENTEL, 85. Former Senate President Aquilino ‘Nene’ Q. Pimentel Jr. joined his Creator last October 20, 2019. He was 85. Considered the Father of the Local Government Code, Pimentel was Mayor of Cagayan de Oro from 1980 to 1984. He was an Assemblyman representing the city from 1984 to 1986. He was Secretary of the Interior and Local Government from 1986-1987. He served as Senator from 1987 to 1992 and from 1998 to 2010. In November 2000, he became the country’s 23rd Senate President.

SPECIAL INTERESTS – among major stories that made the headlines include the recent Maguindanao Massacre decision, the Barra Horror House, the Moffats visit, Miss Earth 2019 visit, Launching of modern PUVs, Pia Wurtzbach’s visit and retirement of Ian Lariba’s jersey, among others.
