Pinyapel wins a Wood Pencil at the D&AD Future Impact
s Award, in recognition of its potential in creating a huge impact on environment and sustainability as it is proposed to be a food packaging alternative to single-plastic. The award will be presented in New York City, USA on 06 November 2019.
As a Future Impact awardee, Design Center will undergo a mentoring and training programme designed to accelerate pinyapel‘s development in order to deliver tangible impact in their category area within 12 months. The D&AD Future Impact Programme supports great ideas that have the potential to change the world.
The “Pinyapel” is a locally-manufactured specialty paper made out of discarded pineapple leaves from pineapple plantations of Bukidnon. Coined and developed by the Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), an attached agency of the DTI, the “Pinyapel” is a portmanteau of the Filipino words “pinya” (pineapple) and “papel” (paper). It is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the DCP, Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper, Nature’s Fresh and Ideatechs Packaging Corporation.
Pinyapel is a result of the materials research and development initiative of the DTI-Design Center of the Philippines, and is a collaborative project between Design Center, Nature’s Fresh Pineapples (supplier of discarded pineapple leaves), CDO Handmade Paper (paper sheet processer), and Ideatechs Packaging (converter to food packaging applications).
