Spider fighting or ‘arawan’ is a long past time among Filipinos … just for fun and definitely not for gambling. But yesterday, October 6, four people were arrested during a raid by police at Purok 2, Poblacion, Valencia City, Bukidnon after engaging in so-called ‘spider derby’ where people place bets on the winning spider which is a form of illegal gambling.

In his Facebook post, Valencia City Police Chief Lt. Col. Surki Serenas identified the four as Lawrence Tumlos y Babiera, Godofredo Cepeda y Garcesa, Mario Das-ao y Lapayan and Beleanio Netesa Jr y Roderas, all of legal age and residents of Valencia City. They will face criminal charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 which provides penalties for illegal gambling activities. The main organizer, however, escaped by mixing with the crowd during the raid.

Seized from the suspects were one (1) piece sling bag, six (6) boxes of spiders, thirty-two (32) live spiders, one (1) improvised spider fighting arena (stick with stand and platform) and bet money amounting to Php 300.
