”Persistence, perseverance and determination” are among the guiding lights serving as the formula of the College of Agriculture’s KALAMAG Rodeo Team who won unprecedented rodeo championships this year in various places and events it participated throughout the country, thus giving more laurels to the College of Agriculture and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines – Claveria at large.
Their untarnished achievements have made them almost a grand slam performance in rodeo by a student team many times in a row, a feat seldom achieved by a team of this kind through history.
Paving the way and heading towards these achievements, it has all started as an opening salvo earlier this year where the KALAMAG Team wound-up a ravishing first runner-up finish [out of the 13 competing teams in Mindanao] during the 12th Federation of Agriculture Students in Mindanao (FASMin) Congress Rodeo Competition last January 28-February 1 when the university hosted this congress. The same team represented the University in Rodeo National Finals in Vigan, Ilocos Sur sometime in March where the team placed a remarkable 3rd runner-up title.
Further, the most promising of all was when the team competed among the best schools in the country during the world renown, Rodeo Masbateño in Masbate City sometime in April where it grabbed the National Championship title (men’s category). The sweetest of all was when Mr. Carl Louise Reciña, DAT-2 student, proved his mettle by notching the most coveted title, the ‘National Rodeo King’, thereby outplacing and lording it over the highly favored contestants from the front running schools, even the province’s host school.
Though, it fell short to the delegation championship round when the team participated at the Rodeo Festival of Xavier University College of Agriculture’s Manresa Days last September 5-7, 2019, it still managed to grab various first places and runners-up finish in individual and team categories both for male and female.
The winning streak continues for the KALAMAG Team when it competed recently at Rodeo sa Musuan 2019 in CMU, Musuan, Bukidnon last September 13-14, 2019. With the eleven (11) teams from various schools in Mindanao and Visayas that competed, combining male and female, the KALAMAG Team emerged as the OVER-ALL CHAMPION. What an awesome achievement!
This KALAMAG Team is composed of agriculture students coming from DAT-BAT, BTHM, BSA, and BSAF programs. The indefatigable advisers, Dr. Angelina G. Corneta, Mr. John Preach C. Quirino and Mr. Jesryl Janopol, have all been guiding them all throughout the preparations heading towards the competitions.
With such untarnished pride and honor the team has brought to USTP in general, the College of Agriculture, through thick and thin, has been further motivated to take pride of giving all-out support to the team, and has ever been supporting the cause of students vis a vis student development and recognition.
The team heads-up to intensify more skills training regularly as the College is strategizing plan relative to rodeo enhancement skills training, where rodeo enthusiasts can partake and be trained along the process.
Dr. Rosalito A. Quirino, OIC-USTP System President/Chancellor, expressed his profound felicitations to the KALAMAG Rodeo team, as well as all the coaches and the College of Agriculture for a job well-done.
KUDOS and LONG WAY TO GO, GUYS!!
