The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) sees the establishment of Metro Cagayan de Oro by 2025. According to the Philippine Development Plan for 2017-2022, the City of Golden Friendship will become the 4th economic center in the country joining Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao.
As of 2019, a lot of road infrastructure projects interconnecting the major towns and cities of Metro CDO are now either ongoing or being proposed. Outlying areas of Cagayan de Oro which includes the adjacent towns of Opol and Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental and Manolo Fortich and Libona in Bukidnon are currently enjoying a spillover of progress. El Salvador City is also slowly transforming. Manolo Fortich has plans of becoming a city as well. The planned aerotropolis in Laguindingan is finally taking off with Ayala Land’s Habini Bay and Technopark development.
Meanwhile, in Phividec, two large steel firms are now under construction (Keim Hing Steel and Sanjia Steel). A 3rd steel plant is also likely to start construction soon right across Keim Hing Steel).
Signs are there for the realization of metro status.
