The long overdue expansion of Laguindingan Airport might soon become a reality. Last year, passenger traffic exceeded the 2 million mark which is already beyond the 1.6 million design capacity of the airport terminal resulting to congestion.
A P90 million budget has been allocated in the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA) which would cover the Detailed Engineering (DE) of the proposed expanded passenger terminal building, and refurbishment of dilapidated areas in the airport which includes the much-criticized comfort rooms.
This is being done while Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) is awaiting approval from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) for its unsolicited proposal to develop and expand the airport where it plans to spend some P42.7-billion to cover construction of new passenger terminals, installation of required equipment, and enhancement and development of airside facilities.
Photo below shows the congested passenger terminal taken at around 10:00pm last July 14. This happens every time a flight is delayed, more so if several flights are delayed.
