Cagayan de Oro pride and former national table tennis player Ian “Yanyan” Lariba became the 5th student-athlete to have her jersey retired by De La Salle University (DLSU).
In a simple ceremony held yesterday at the Enrique M. Razon Sports Center attended by university officials, Lariba’s teammates and her family, Lariba’s jersey was hoisted above the arena and now hangs with the jerseys of other DLSU greats like Florendo Ritualo, Lim Eng Beng, and Kurt Bachmann, all of men’s basketball, and Manilla Santos of women’s volleyball.
Lariba is the first athlete from a non-team sport to have her jersey retired. Browse more photos below courtesy of The LaSallian.
Before her untimely death in September last year due to acute myeloid leukemia, Lariba was a three-time UAAP MVP, two-time UAAP Athlete of the Year awardee, and had the rare feat of being undefeated in her entire UAAP career. She was the first Filipina table tennis player to compete in the Olympics, and was the flag-bearer of the Philippine delegation during the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
