The Nazareth Lawn Tennis Club is opposing the demolition of its tennis courts which will be affected by a proposed building to be constructed by the local government of Barangay Nazareth in Cagayan de Oro City.
The tennis club is home of the city’s most active tennis organization and the Nazareth tennis courts have so far produced many of the country’s best including Francis Casey Alcantara and Marisue Jacutin and a long list of top tennis players. You can read some of their names in the link below. It has also hosted a lot of national tennis tournaments and as part of the Philippine Tennis Academy – CDO Satellite, it is where aspiring young tennis players train and hone their skills.
Based on the info as shown below, the new building will house office spaces for PNP Police Precinct No. 9, Bureau of Fire and Protection, Nazareth Senior Citizen, Lupong Tagapamayapa, the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children and Violence against Women office. Two of the three tennis courts will be demolished to give way for the construction leaving only just one tennis court.
Here’s a map of the Barangay Plaza which covers a single block and bounded by 12th, 13th, 16th, 24th and 20th streets. It’s the only block in Nazareth intended for parks and open space and community facilities.
Here are photos of the Nazareth tennis courts. Unless the proposed construction is stopped, only one tennis court will remain.
The tennis club have posted tarpaulins onsite opposing the project.
