Are we going to see the last of tricycles, pedicabs (trisikads) and tricabs along the National Highway in Cagayan de Oro City? This after Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo M. Año reiterated his office’s directive to all city and municipal mayors to ban pedicabs and tricycles along national highways for safety reasons.
In a news release posted on its website (LINK), the DILG stressed that no tricycle or pedicab should be allowed to operate on national highways utilized by four-wheel vehicles greater than four tons and where normal speed exceeds 40 kilometers per hour. Accordingly, allowing them on main thoroughfares poses hazards to other motor vehicles, the riding public, and even to the drivers themselves.
However, trisikads and tricycles can still traverse along main highways if allowed by the concerned Sangguniang Bayan or as in this case the City Council of Cagayan de Oro if there is no other alternative route.
In Cagayan de Oro City, there is continuing unregulated operation of trisikads and tricycles including motorized sikads and lately tricabs particularly along the highway from Cugman to Bugo.
Will the city government heed the DILG directive? Lets keep our fingers crossed.
