Starting January 1, 2019, shoppers in Cagayan de Oro will have to bring their own bags in buying grocery items as the City Hall starts to enforce City Ordinance No. 13378-2018 banning carryout plastic bags.

More specifically, the ordinance provides for the prohibition on the use of plastic bags or ‘sando’ bags by all commercial establishments including malls, sari-sari stores and public markets EXCEPT for plastic roll bags for wet goods such as meat and poultry products, fish and seafood, fresh fruits and processed food. Violators will be fined at least P3,000 per ‘sando bag’.
