Millions of consumers in the Philippines stand to benefit when costs for text messages as well as voice calls will soon be reduced at a much cheaper rate of P0.50 per minute for voice calls and P0.15 per text message. This after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) released Memorandum Circular 05-07-2018 establishing the new interconnection rates which takes effect 15 days after its publication in newspapers of general circulation.

The said memorandum dated July 19 was in compliance with Department Order No. 002-2018 of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which directed the NTC to craft measures that will ensure lower interconnection rates for both mobile voice and SMS being offered by telcos. Currently, Telcos are charging P2.50 per minute for voice calls and P0.05 per text message.
