With the occurrence of flooding again affecting Cagayan de Oro City, a major issue that’s always in discussion is garbage which has been blamed for clogging up of the city’s major drainage lines.
The city’s new Sanitary Landfill is now located in Sitio Burakan in Brgy. Pagalungan, some 20 kilometers southwest of the city proper. Here’s the map.
As of today, the access road to the sanitary landfill site is still being improved. A two-lane road concreting project is ongoing as shown below.
This road project will enable IPM Construction & Development Corp, the city’s contractor for garbage collection and disposal, easy access to the site.
Accordingly, during the first few weeks of operation of the new landfill, IPM’s trucks usually encounter engine and mechanical trouble due to the bad condition of the access road.
But soon this access road which is estimated to be a kilometer long will be fully paved.
The solid waste being disposed at the landfill are those that are residual wastes which cannot be recycled.
There are no recyclers or scavengers at the landfill site.
That’s the main entrance of the landfill.
This is the entrance to the landfill. The site is surrounded by rolling hills.
Earth fill covering of dumped wastes are conducted daily.
By the way, travel time from city proper to the site is approximately 40 minutes one way. The life of the landfill depends on the volume of wastes being disposed. Further, the life extends if we implement segregation at the household level. So… reduce, recycle, reuse!
