Cagayan de Oro’s three top amateur boxers got off to a good start after Carlo Paalam, Marvin Tabamo and Sugar Ray Ocana hurdled respective rivals to advance into the quarterfinal round of the ongoing Thailand Open International Boxing 2018 Tournament (formerly Thailand King’s Cup).
Paalam outclassed Japan’s Ryusei Matsumoto at the light flyweight (49kg) category by 5-0 points win.
Meanwhile, Tabamo defeated Mauritius’ Jean David Rolfo at the flyweight (52kg), 5-0.
And finally, Sugar Rey Ocana defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Kai Yu at the light welterweight (64kg) via 5-0 points victory.
Paalam will try shoot for at least a bronze medal when he faces Thailand’s Samak Saehan today. Tabamo is also scheduled to battle Korean Kim InKyu for at least the bronze.
Ocana also tries to go for at least a bronze when he faces Singapore’s Tay Jia Wei later tonight.
