Local maritime officials have now confirmed that the animal sighted last May 14 off the coast of Midway Beach Resort in Initao, Misamis Oriental was a baby whale shark.
In an interview early today at a local radio station, a maritime officer said after thorough investigation, they concluded that the sea animal was a baby whale shark or locally known as a Toki-toki or Butanding. He added the animal was probably lost and went astray in looking for food. The presence of the whale shark also indicates that the coastal area is clean.
This was also posted by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Initao in its Facebook page. Still, local and maritime officials still advised all beach goers to be cautious and alert at all times.
Initial TV interviews revealed the animal was large and longer than a jetski. Watch this news report from ABS-CBN TV Patrol Northern Mindanao.
