There were lots of developments relating to the economic progress of Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental this year. Here is our PROGRESS WATCH: 2017 YEARENDER – a compilation of major developments and events in and around the City of Golden Friendship during the year which we have posted and shared in social media.

MAJOR COMPLETED DEVELOPMENTS:

SM CDO Downtown Premier – SM opened its 2nd mall in Cagayan de Oro City last May 12. The 5-level mall has a gross floor area of 178,000 sqm. which includes a 3-level SM Store, 5 digital theaters, 2 Director’s Club, 1 Large Screen Format Cinema and a 1,500-slot parking building.

Seven Seas Waterpark and Resort – the much awaited world-class water-themed park finally opened on October 28 with a grand launch held December 17.

Coastal Road (Gusa-Lapasan Section) – the 4.46-kilometer Lapasan-Gusa Section of the Coastal Road was finally opened on November 10.

Igpit Bridge – a major link of the National Highway was inaugurated also last November 10.

Xavier Ateneo Sports Centre – the sports facility was inaugurated last December 16 and boasts of a 2,500-capacity gymnasium, a football field, a polyurethane track oval, a semi Olympic size swimming pool, and a parking lot that can accommodate approximately 200 cars.

Wilcon Depot – the largest home improvement retail store in the city opened in September.

ORORAMA Supercenter Annex – the expansion had its grand opening this December with celebrity guests.

Prince Hypermart Opol – large retail business has finally invaded Opol last May 2017.

Mindanao Enduro Park – the 27-hectare motorcycle race track located in Bagocboc, Opol, Misamis Oriental opened last March 25. The park is considered to be the first of its kind in the country.

Major Progress Updates:

The Loop North Tower – Vista Residences topped off its 26-storey North Tower last November 28.

Aspira Tower 1 – the 29-storey condominium under the Avida brand is poised to become the tallest in the city.

Mesaverte Residences – towers 1 and 2 have already topped off while tower 3 is now rising.

New Dawn Hotel Plus – the 18-storey hotel building is the tallest in the city proper.

Sierra Del Oro – development of the tourist destination is still ongoing.

Tuscania Towers – vertical works have finally commenced this year.

Primavera City – phase 1 is well underway with Building A topping off last December 12.

Limketkai BPO Module 2 – full blast construction was finally observed.

Balulang-Macasandig Bridge – the whole span was completed this year.

Bonbon-Macabalan Bridge – construction finally began this year.

Ace Medical Center – construction works finally started in July.

St. Francis Doctors’s Hospital and Medical Center – new rendering released and site preparations now underway.

Bria Flats – full blast construction observed.

One Oasis Building 2 – Filinvest topped off Building 2 of its One Oasis Asian-Balinese inspired and master-planned community last Nov. 25.

Pontefino Estates – construction of model units are underway with main access road also being concreted.

Familia Apartments – the last three buildings of the residential complex are now under construction.

NMMC Expansion – the massive expansion works are slowly transforming the medical complex at the heart of the city.

Madonna & Child Hospital Expansion – the expansion works progressed significantly.

Polymedic Medical Plaza Carpark Building – construction began in July 2017.

New West Diversion Road (Canitoan-Coastal Road) – continuing construction (section by section) observed

Citymall Bulua – construction slowed down but building is almost done

Citymall Iponan – construction slowed down but building almost done

Vista Mall (Allhome) – vertical works finally began

Yang Ze Hotel – a new 7-storey hotel is rising inside Alwana Business Park

PAF 15th Strike Wing Airbase – the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of billeting facilities for the PAF’s 15th Strike Wing was held last February 1, 2017.

Top 10 Competitive Cities – the city placed 10th in the Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index for 2017.

Others progress and developments:

Evergreen Shipping Line – Evergreen Shipping Line made a successful maiden voyage last October 29 from Kaohsiung (Taiwan) to Northern Mindanao thru the Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

New Hall Of Justice – court proceedings and related transactions in Cagayan de Oro transferred October 2, 2017 at the new Gold Ridge Building located along PN Roa Sr. Avenue corner Masterson Avenue.

New PRC Office – PRC relocated at its new office at Limketkai Center.

New Gantry Crane For Cdo Port – Cagayan de Oro Port added another gantry crane, its 4th to further beef up its containerized operations.

New CDO Landfill Site – the city has a new Sanitary Landfill located in Barangay Pagalungan.

CUMC SSR Kidney Institute – the first kidney institute in Mindanao that offers state of the art machines opened at Capitol University Medical Center.

Man Trucks And Buses, Hino, Toyota (ongoing) – new automotive showrooms in the city

New Developments: Velmiro Heights – Cebu Landmasters 2nd project located in Uptown CDO; Manors Gran Europa; Bria Homes at Gran Europa; Xavier University’s Andrew L. Gotianun Sr. Center for Integrated Technologies located in Uptown Cagayan de Oro

Other Proposals: Mantibugao Industrial Techno Park; Laguindingan Techno Park

Industrial Updates:

San Miguel Corporation Complex – San Miguel Corp. (SMC) held the official ground breaking ceremony for its new three million hectoliter brewery at the 50-hectare lot inside Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental. This is part of the P60 billion investment which incudes a packaging plant, a chicken nuggets and hotdog manufacturing plant (Purefoods-Hormel), and a bottled water production facility.

Gardenia Bread Factory – Nutrimax Fresh Baked Inc., a subsidiary of Singapore-based Gardenia International Pte. Ltd. broke ground last August 14, 2017 its bread manufacturing plant inside Phividec Industrial Estate specifically at Sta. Cruz, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

New Government-Initiated Projects: Jr Borja City Hospital North Wing, City Hospital – Lumbia, Opol Port, Laguindingan Seaport, Feasibility Study on proposed Jr Borja Highway With Tunnel, and Bonbon Fishport.

Maymay Entrata was the PBB Grand Winner this year.

Miss Cagayan De Oro 2017 – Katrina Laurice Zayas Acaylar was crowned Miss Cagayan de Oro 2017.

Miss Scuba Philippines – Sherlyn Legaspi Doloriel representing Misamis Oriental was crowned Miss Scuba Philippines 2017. She also won Miss Photogenic in the Miss Scuba International 2017 pageant held lastn November 18, 2017 in Malaysia.

Streetby – the app created by Agila Innovations, Inc. is slowly gaining popularity for convenience and innovation.

Pabama Bus – new high-end bus units now equipped with tabs

Pinoy Aquaman – Lawyer Ingemar Macarine’s “Swim for Peace” from Camiguin to Misamis Oriental lasted 7 hours and 47 minutes and 23.51 kilometers swimming at sea.

Tourism Watch:

Despite the setback brought about by the Marawi siege, there were a lot of promising developments related to tourism. Remember the Maldives-like resort in Laguindingan? It was one of the most read articles for the year.

Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan) Became Cebu Pacific’s Latest Hub – Last October 20, Laguindingan was officially launched as Cebu Pacific’s 7th hub.

More Flights At Laguindingan – more flights were launched this year: CDO-Clark, CDO-Boracay, CDO-Tagbilaran, CDO-Dumaguete

Talakag Bonseta’s Funfun Rides and Donggawan Viewing Deck – this development prompted travelers to take second look of Talakag.

More resorts – Kagay-an Lawndale Spring Resort (Re-Opening), C Resort, Coral Beach Resort, Project Rupert, Lagoon Beach Resort, Kawayan Cliff Resort.

Fastcat – the fast ferry service officially announced its new routes serving Opol-Camiguin-Bohol. However, weather disturbances like Urduja and Vinta prompted Fastcat to postpone the inaugural trips.

Feel Camiguin – the viral video significantly boosted Camiguin’s tourism potentials

Cokaliong New Shipping Route – the Cebu-based shipping firm started serving the Cebu-CDO-Cebu and CDO-Jagna-CDO routes in March 2017.

Natural Tourist Spots – Kanipaan River Tour, Burias Shoal and Manlumot Falls

Paragliding at Sierra del Oro – the first of its kind in the city was launched in May

Sports – perhaps the biggest sports achievement for CDO this year was when Milan Melindo claimed the IBF junior flyweight title with a stunning 1st round TKO of Japanese champ Akira Yaegashi in Tokyo, Japan in May 2017.

In basketball, Assumption Montessori School made headlines by winning the NBTC National High School Championship (Division II). LINK

Also in basketball, PBA rookie Jio Jalalon was part of the 12-man Gilas Pilipinas team in the Jones Cup as well as the FIBA Asia Cup.

CDO hosted Gilas Pilipinas vs. PBA Mindanao All-Stars which ended in a tie 114-all.

Northern Mindanao’s elementary baseball team representing Team Philippines bagged the bronze medal in the 2017 Asia Pacific Regional Little League Baseball Championship (Intermediate Division) held at Hwaseong Dream Park in Hwaseong, Korea.

Cagayan de Oro pride Francis Casey Alcantara was ranked 875th in the world in January becoming the Philippines’ top tennis player based on the latest rankings by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for the 2017 tennis season.

Olympian Ian Lariba was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), her family announced on May 29.

Engrs 13th National Convention, Honda Motorcylce Convention, Solemnizing Officers 10th National Convention, Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) 43rd Midyear Convention, Philippine Society Of Anesthesiologists Annual Mid-Year Convention, General Douglas Mcarthur Breakout Reenactment, etc…

Major News:

Marawi Seige and Martial Law – Maute terrorist group attacked Marawi City on May 22, 2017 prompting Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to declare Martial Law in Mindanao on May 23, 2017.

Suspected Maute Bomber nabbed in Macasandig – A joint government operation resulted in the arrest of MOHAMMAD NOAIM MAUTE aka ABU JADID on June 15 in Brgy. Macasandig. The boyish-looking wanted person is said to be a suspected bomber of the terrorist group whose photo has been circulating the social media and government checkpoints.

Severe Tropical Storm Vinta – Just recently, the storm caused the Cagayan de Oro River and other major rivers in the city to overflow inundating several areas in the city resulting to massive evacuation of more than 21,000 but with zero casualties.

January 2017 Flood – on January 16, 2017, heavy rains poured into Cagayan de Oro and flooded CM Recto.

Igpit Bridge Collapse – thousands of commuters and motorists were stranded for several hours along the National Highway in Opol beginning from March 7 up to the afternoon of March 8 due to the collapse of a portion of the bridge approach.

Former City Mayor Pablo Magtajas, 77 – the longest serving mayor of the city from 1984-1998 died June 19, 2017 due to cardiac arrest.

Hotel Conchita Fire – the 5-storey hotel located right across Cogon Public Market was destroyed by fire which began at around 10:50pm, July 13, 2017 and lasted for several hours before it was put out early morning on July 14.

Rotoras Slay – Dr. Ricardo Rotoras, current President of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) was shot dead by an unidentified gunman at around 1:00am, December 2 near his home in Upper Carmen after attending a Christmas party.

Other Issues: Traffic and flooding continue to be the biggest problems plaguing the city.
