After more than three hours of negotiation, a lone gunman hiding inside San Isidro Labrador Parish Church in Naawan, Misamis Oriental yielded to authorities.

Lovernton Ruedas, reportedly a former choir member at the said parish surrendered to police and local authorities which also included Governor Yevgeny Emano at around noon yesterday. Fr. Roniedon Valmoria, the parish priest turned over to police the suspect’s .45 caliber pistol.

Radio reports gathered revealed that the suspect initially went to the municipal police station looking for the town’s police chief regarding a matter involving his cousin. After a misunderstanding, the suspect ran after police tried to accost him for carrying a firearm.

Ruedas traded shots with police and ran towards the church where police state he held hostage Fr. Valmoria. The priest later denied he was held hostage by the suspect.

Ruedas is now is facing charges of serious illegal detention and illegal possession of firearms.
