The Philippines’ John Vincent Pangga defeated Kazakhstan’s Talgat Syrymbetov via a close split decision to barge into the gold medal match in the flyweight division of the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The 16-year old Pangga from Cagayan de Oro City eked out a 3-2 points victory against the heavily favored Kazakh in a close fight highlighted by a standing eight-count scored by the Filipino in the first round.

The referee raises Pangga’s hand after the announcement of the winner.

Pangga will go for the gold tomorrow against Thailand’s Sukthet Sarawut who beat Kyrgyztan’s Ibraimov Muktarbek.
