Gamers of esports can now be considered professional athletes after a milestone in Philippine sports took place last July 19 with the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) giving the players of two top DOTA teams in the country licenses to compete.
Based on a report from Philippine News Agency, professional players of TNC Pro Team and Execration got their professional athlete licenses from GAB less than two weeks of The International 7 (TI7), DOTA 2’s most prestigious tournament in Seattle, USA which is currently ongoing now in the Group Stage.
This license is the same issued to professional players in basketball, billiard, boxing and football, among others. Such recognition will also protect the integrity of the games, prevent game-fixing, fraud and possible breach of contracts that could leave local players at a disadvantage.
Who will be the first from Cagayan de Oro to be given such license?
