El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental is located some 21 kilometers west of Cagayan de Oro City. For several years before its cityhood, El Salvador was known as the province’s emerging industrial center outside of Phividec Industrial Estate due to the presence of large industries such as Asia Brewery Inc., Tanduay Distilleries, Virgin Cola Bottling Plant, Universal Robina Corp., Zest-O Corporation and junk food firm WL Foods Corp, among others.
Later, the increasing popularity of the Divine Mercy Shrine which was completed in 2008 put the city on the map both as a religious pilgrimage site and a tourism destination. It continues today to be the city’s top sites to visit.
As the city progresses, it continues to complement the regional trade center which is Cagayan de Oro City. With Metro CDO now seen by government planners to materialize in the medium term, El Salvador City dubbed “The City of the Saviour” could soon be in the midst of urbanization in the metropolitan area.
