The City Government of Cagayan de Oro is eyeing regulation of the proliferation of the so-called ‘tri-cabs’ in the city. This after Land Transportation Office (LTO) Regional Director Oscar Salcedo urged the city council to enact an ordinance that would regulate the operations of these three-wheeled vehicles.
In an article at Gold Star Daily, Salcedo said tricabs are not regulated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board because these cannot be considered as 4-wheel vehicles. Further, these vehicles should fall under the control by the local government unit.
Tricabs are often seen plying the National Highway particularly in the eastern part of the city and are reportedly operating without necessary permits. Some instances have also resulted to accidents.
In many areas of the province, tricabs have replaced motorelas because they are faster and can access uphill roads like other 4-wheeled PUJs.
