HIGALAAY FESTIVAL, Cagayan de Oro City’s premier month-long cultural event held in August in time for the celebration of the feast of its patron saint Saint Augustine is setting out its list of colorful, culturally-rich and fun-filled core and parallel events that are aimed to promote the city and its environs as an investment and tourism destination.

The festival is a good showcase of collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector including local and national line agencies, the commercial sector, the academe, the arts and the industrial sectors. The festivities offer locals, guests, tourists and investors a taste of Kagay-anon culture, hospitality and distinct brand of fun.

Here are the updated list and some details of each CORE EVENT.

Date: August 1-31, 2017 8am-10pm
Venue: Gaston Park

The Garden Show presents the landscaping skills of gardeners and landscaping artists in Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao. Ornamental plants are sold in the Garden Show which will be held in Duaw kagay-an Park. Farmers from the city will sell their agricultural products in the Agri Fair which will be held in Gaston Park.

The Mindanao Fashion Summit brings together fashion designers all over Mindanao to exhibit and display their latest Mindanaoan Collection for the holidays. The event showcases an all-Mindanaoan Collection of top designers from Davao, General Santos, Cotabato, Surigao, Iligan, Butuan, Ozamiz and Zamboanga City, and of course, Cagayan de Oro City.

COWBOY FESTIVAL: The Annual Cagayan de Oro Horse Show
Date: August 18-20, 2017 8am-6pm
Venue: CDO Uptown

The Cowboy Festival is a spectacle of horsemen events like Oval Race, Obstacle Race and Barrel Race which is participated in by horse enthusiasts in all levels of expertise from all over the country. Considered one of most prestigious horse shows in the country, this event draws hundreds of horsemen and enthusiasts from all over the Philippines.

KAHIMUNAN Regional Trade Fair 2017

An annual regional marketing event which showcases the best products of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental – from processed food, sugar, coffee and beverages, nuts and cashew, spices and condiments, crafts, homestyle and living and organic products. Kahimunan (Creations of Northern Mindanao) Regional Trade Fair 2017 also includes micro and small entrepreneurs from Cagayan de Oro whose products have reached world class status. .

Kagay-an Festival Marathon has contributed a lot to making the City of Golden Friendship the country’s next top running destination. Runners and running enthusiasts from Northern Mindanao and as far as Luzon come to Cagayan de Oro just to run and earn bragging rights to say, “I am a finisher of the Kagay-an Festival Marathon”. Events in the marathon are 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km runs.

COMPETITION Venue: Luna-Velez to Divisoria

The Cagayan de Oro Carnival Street Dance Competition is a street festival marked by merrymaking, an explosion of colors and dances. Groups composed of schools or barangay contingents dance on the street in a grand costume parade accompanied by carnival music. Revelers masquerade through the streets in a grand dazzling costumes dancing to the international beat and flavor of the carnival-Cagayan de Oro style. An added touch to this year’s competition is the search for the Carnival Queen and King.

The newest addition to the line-up of core events of Higalaay Festival, the Higalaay Choral Competition brings to the fore the city’s rich culture and the residents’ musicality. An initiative of the regional office of the Department of Education, the contest aims to bring together in one competition the choral groups of the 14 divisions of the regional office. This year’s contest piece is the lively song, “Sakayanon” as arranged by Milagros Serina-Moreno.

MISS CAGAYAN DE ORO 2017 (Coronation Night)

The pageant carries on the city’s tradition of conducting a search for the young women with beauty, wit and charm to be Cagayan de Oro’s Ambassador of Goodwill. The search involves various activities such as the Press Presentation, Swimsuit Competition, Talent Competition, Evening Gown Competition. The Coronation Night is at 7:00pm on August 26 at the Limketkai Center Atrium.

The HIGALAAY Street Parade and Floats is our festival’s version of a civic-military parade. The parade is accompanied by contingents from schools, barangays, civic groups and drum and lyre bands. Competing and non-competing floats will also be featured in the parade. This year’s theme for the float competition is “Ang Sugilanon: Great Moments in the History of Cagayan de Oro”.

Now on its 4th year, the musical fireworks display is a fitting bisperas event to the month-long Higalaay Festival. This is a much-awaited event that draws Kagay-anons gather around the Duaw Kagay-an Park and on the river banks of Cagayan River to enjoy the colorful and grand display of dancing lights to the tune of classical and modern music.

Processions mark the feast of St. Augustine on August 28. In the early morning of the Feast Day of St. Augustine is a procession around the city by residents from the poblacion, parishes, schools and religious groups. Later in the morning is a fluvial procession honoring the city’s patron saint.

Each year, SM City’s Pyro Festival is a sure crowd drawer. Families, circles of friends and corporate groups bring out their picnic baskets at the Pueblo de Oro Business Park to enjoy each other’s company under a brightly lit sky. This year’s Pyro Festival will again draw in pyro experts from all over the country who will come here to outdo each other in fireworks artistry and skills. The result– a colorful finale to the city’s fiesta celebration.

Decorated boats and rafts with images of St. Augustine, his mother – Sta. Monica, Birhen sa Kota, and the other patron saints of the 80 barangays of the city, go up Cagayan River. The fluvial procession is the community’s effort to continually bless the river as well as promote the endeavors of the stakeholders in the protection of Cagayan River.
