In relation to our yesterday’s post on the launching of the Regional Development Plan (RDP) for Northern Mindanao, National Economic and Development Authority Director General and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said in a keynote speech that Cagayan de Oro’s urban expansion rate may outpace Davao’s based on projected population growth and functional role as a principal gateway and trans-shipment hub in Northern Mindanao.
In an article at Businessworld, Pernia said the region’s development framework is centered on being a major transshipment hub and industrial center in the South due to its strategic location, and a gateway to Mindanao. The plan also sees Cagayan de Oro as the fourth metropolitan center by 2025.
The medium term development plan for the region highlighted four of the region’s strategic development areas (SDAs): (1) the expanded Cagayan-Iligan Industrial and Trade Corridor that will be the site for manufacturing and processing of high-value products; (2) the Agri-Fishery and Eco-Cultural Tourism initiatives in Misamis Occidental; (3) the Agribusiness venture in Bukidnon, and (4) the Camiguin-Gingoog Tourism Adventure Loop.
