The government is pursuing the Visayas-Mindanao grid interconnection by 2020-2022 through the new western route (Cebu-Negros-Zamboanga del Norte) as the Department of Energy (DOE) is looking into the possibility the project will be implemented using government funds instead of the National Grid Corp. of the Phils. (NGCP) funds.
In a report from SunStar Davao, the plan is now being studied by the DOE. Accordingly, the plan was suggested to remove the burden of the consuming public on paying for the costs of the project because NGCP is now a private company and needs to recover the costs.
It can be recalled that the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) last year approved the study for the new grid interconnection route by NGCP after the original Leyte-Mindanao route was deemed not feasible. See the two options being studied below.
