Do you know that our country’s men’s national volleyball team is coached by a Kagay-anon? While everyone including the media are focused on women’s volleyball, national coach Sinfronio “Sammy” Acaylar has been preparing the country’s men’s national volleyball team for two months now for the upcoming 29th Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.

Acaylar is a seasoned coach in volleyball piloting University of Perpetual Help Altas to nine men’s titles, four women’s titles and six juniors titles in the NCAA. One of his record feat was steering the Altas to a record 54-game winning streak from 2010 to 2014. He was recently signed up to coach the University of the East in the UAAP.

In an article from ABS-CBN Sports, Acaylar came from an impoverished family in Cagayan de Oro and excelled in volleyball when he was young. He was spotted in an interscholastic meet of what is now known as Palarong Pambansa and was offered an athletic scholarship in Rizal Province. He grabbed the opportunity and went to Manila against his father’s will.

Acaylar was named national coach in January this year and will steer the young squad led by reigning NCAA MVP Johnvic De Guzman.
