Former Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Pablo “Ambing” Magtajas” passed away last night at the age of 77.
In a report from Bombo Radyo, the former mayor was rushed yesterday before noon at Cagayan de Oro Medical Center due to chest pains and was placed under intensive care unit (ICU). His passing was announced at around 8:30pm.
Born in Catarman, Camiguin Province, Magtajas was the longest serving mayor of the city from 1984-1998. Prior to politics, he was a labor lawyer.
It was during his stint when the city first experienced a boom in commercial investments with the opening of new malls like Limketkai Mall, Gaisano City and Ororama Megacenter; the development of Uptown with Pueblo de Oro, Camella Homes and Xavier Estates; and opening of Agora Market and Bus Terminal as well as the Westbound Public Market and Bus Terminal in Bulua. He was also instrumental in the development of Duaw Park, the riverside park near City Hall.
