Just as we are celebrating our 119th Independence Day today, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano has just recently filed House Bill 5867 creating a “Geographic Renaming Commission”  which would “study the possibility and the feasibility of renaming our country.”

In a report from GMA News, Alejano stated in his proposal filed last June 7 that the said commission would be composed of three members from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF). He said the purpose was to ‘throw away the bonds of colonialism and become truly independent’.

History states that the Philippines was named after King Philip II of Spain for which the country has been a colony for more than three centuries.
