All cases involving the Maute group who attacked Marawi City will be handled by the Cagayan de Oro City Regional Trial Court.
In a news report from the Philippine News Agency, the decision came after the Supreme Court’s regular en banc session which rejected the request of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II to create special courts outside Mindanao to hear cases that will be filed against the Maute terrorist group.
The SC likewise tapped the Court of Appeals based in Cagayan de Oro to handle terrorism cases under Republic Act 9372 (Human Security Act). And lastly, the SC also directed the Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez to coordinate with the 4th Infantry Division also based in CDO for the appropriate security measures for court personnel, prosecutors, lawyers and the accused.
Meanwhile, Secretary was quoted to be saying they would appeal the SC order considering Cagayan de Oro is too near Lanao and Marawi City.
