The name Amai Pakpak has been mentioned more frequently now with the siege in Marawi City by the Maute terrorist group. Amai Pakpak Medical Center was named after Datu Amai Pakpak, the hero of the Battles of Marawi in 1891 and 1895. There are many places in Marawi named after him.
From pinoyfolktales.blogspot.com. Datu Amai Pakpak was a Maranao leader who heroically defended then Kota Marahui (now known as Camp Amai Pakpak) against the Spanish forces.
On March 10, 1895, Amai Pakpak died fighting with his men, including his son and 23 datus defending his fort against 5,000 Spanish forces.
His heroic deed was among those recorded in history books. In fact, his bust can be located at Rizal Park in Manila as shown below.
The National Highway which traverses the City of Marawi is also named Amai Pakpak Avenue in honor of the fallen hero.
