Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has declared Martial Law in Mindanao at 10:00pm last night, May 23, 2017 after the Maute terrorist group attacked Marawi City yesterday. Such declaration is for a period of 60 days based on the 1987 Constitution and covers the whole island of Mindanao.
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Ernie Abella said the declaration was deemed necessary to suppress lawless violence and rebellion for public safety. Because of the situation, Duterte has cut short his official trip in Russia and will be returning back to the Philippines later today.
