PBA Mindanao All-Stars’ Troy Rosario and Gilas Pilipinas’ Matthew Wright were named co-MVPs as the two teams fought to a 114-114 tie at the end of the Cagayan de Oro leg of the PBA All-Star Week at the jampacked Xavier University Gym.
Rosario was on target for the PBA Mindanao All-Stars scoring a game-high 28 points while Wright had 22 to pace Gilas.
It was a tight game throughout the first half with several lead changes with the PBA All Stars gaining the upper hand at the break, 59-55.
Gilas Pilipinas however, found its rhythm in the 3rd quarter and tried to pull away, 91-79 before the PBA Mindanao All Stars rallied to tie the game at 114-all on a triple by Mark Barroca. After a missed attempt by Gilas, Scottie Thompson had a chance to win the game for the All Stars but missed on a drive off June Mar Fajardo with time running out.
Although there was a festive atmosphere, the game was the first look of Gilas Pilipinas in preparation for the upcoming Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship set next month in Manila.
Latest news is that Gilas coach Chot Reyes has already decided on 9 players as shoo-ins for the squad and will select only the remaining 3 slots from the national pool seeing action the All Star games. Reports state the 9 are: Naturalized player Andray Blatche, June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Abueva, Jayson Castro, Terrence Romeo, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, Raymond Almazan and Allein Maliksi. If the just concluded game will be a basis, Matthew Wright has a good chance of landing the final 3 slots. Reyes is expected to announce the final 12 right after the 2nd All-Star game in Lucena City on Friday.
